Things to do in Colombo

Colombo carries more of Sri Lanka's calendar than everywhere else combined, and it runs on several tracks at once. Theatre and dance fill the Lionel Wendt, Nelum Pokuna and the Elphinstone through most of the year; the hotel ballrooms along Galle Face and Union Place take the conferences, food festivals and dinner-dances; and the clubs, rooftops and standalone venues run club nights that go well past midnight. Add the weekend craft and produce markets, the gallery openings, the startup meetups in co-working spaces, and there is something on almost every night of the week.

Two rhythms are worth knowing. December is the peak — festive-season concerts, visiting international acts and carnivals stack up, and the bigger shows sell out through the organiser's official seller well before the date. Poya days are dry days, so club nights and anything built around a bar either close or shift, which is why a night out here is worth checking against the calendar first. Outside those, entry is usually simpler than it looks: exhibitions and markets are free to walk into, meetups need an RSVP, and only the marquee shows need booking weeks ahead.
