Fort courtyards, a Test ground on the sea wall, and a season that peaks in the dry months.
Galle runs on its season. From roughly December to April the fort fills with literary events, gallery openings, live music in courtyards and hotel terraces, and pop-up dinners in the old Dutch houses — the crowd is a mix of visitors and a well-established local arts scene, and the calendar reflects both. Out of season the pace drops to weekend gigs and community events, which is worth knowing before you plan a trip around an event.
The Test ground is the exception that fills the city on its own schedule. When an international is on, everything within the fort walls books out and the ramparts become free seating with the best view in cricket. Match tickets go through the official seller; most of the arts and food events are ticketed directly by the organiser, often through a link or a WhatsApp number, and the smaller supper clubs seat only a few dozen — book those the day they're announced.
