Things to do in Thalawathugoda

Thalawathugoda is residential Colombo — a suburb of the Kotte belt that grew fast as the city pushed east, sitting between the Diyawanna wetlands and the High Level Road. Its events are neighbourhood-scale by nature. Function and banquet halls take the wedding season, dinner-dances, reunions and company parties; the schools run matches, fairs, prize-givings and concerts; and the temples and churches add feast days, peraheras and the Vesak displays that light up the whole belt in May.

The wetland park on this stretch of the Diyawanna is the one thing here that draws people in from outside, with guided walks, birdwatching and school nature programmes on its own quiet schedule. Otherwise the bigger events people in this area attend are a short drive away in Battaramulla or central Colombo. Most of what is listed for Thalawathugoda is free or charges a small amount at the gate, and is organised by a school, a committee or a hall rather than a promoter.
